Description
Ghana’s iconic Kente cloth has officially been recognised and granted protected status as a national fabric - a historic first for the country. With its new Geographical Indication (GI) status, only Kente woven in Ghana can be certified as ''authentic''.
A Geographical Indication is a form of intellectual property that ties a product’s quality, reputation, and uniqueness to its place of origin. This recognition not only safeguards Kente’s cultural heritage but also empowers local artisans by preventing imitation and global misuse.
Kente now joins the ranks of other globally protected treasures such as Oku white honey from Cameroon, Champagne from France, and Tequila from Mexico.
