Description
Muhammadu Buhari (born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian politician and retired Major General in the Nigerian Army. He served as President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Buhari first came to national prominence as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, after leading a coup that overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari. His military rule was marked by an anti-corruption campaign and strict discipline policies.
After decades in politics, he contested several times for the presidency before finally winning the 2015 election, becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president. His administration focused on fighting corruption, improving security—particularly against Boko Haram—and boosting the economy, though it also faced criticism over human rights and economic challenges.
He handed over power to his successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in May 2023.
